This song is also very much a matter of origin and identity. Both lyrically and musically. "Jag är den jag är – I am the one I am" has the melody from Nörstmo Per Persson, who grew up on the same "fäbod" as I. The wonderful melody snakes its way through all the possible permutations of the melodic minor scale in the verse, only to burst out confidentally "I am the one I am" in the parallell major key of the chorus.
Lyrically it is not a traditional Advent hymn. But it is about origin and identity. A recalling of where we come from, a statement of who we are and an ouvertyr to what is to come. The Advent of a new understanding of who we are. And a commitment to follow the road there.
Originally I wrote the lyrics as a more traditional trinity-hymn; with clear references in each of the three verses to the Trinity. But little by little it had to give way to a broader scope that felt more inclusive; about our relationship to Humus, Humans and Heaven, rather than to the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
