En gång i min ungdom

(Smithsong from Uppland)

1. En gång i min ungdom älskade jag
en flicka med rena och ljuva behag.
Hon lova mig tro i lust och i nöd
allt intill den blekaste död.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Hon lova mig tro i lust och i nöd
allt intill den blekaste död.

2. Hon var som en lilja vit uti hyn,
den fagraste flicka som skådats i byn;
ett smittande skratt, en lustiger sång,
vi älskade sommaren lång.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Ett smittande skratt, en lustiger sång,
vi älskade sommaren lång.

3. Men kärleken vissna, kärleken dog
vid Mikaelsmäss hade flickan fått nog.
Hon fann sig en riker, högfärdig man
sa tack och adjö och försvann.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Hon fann sig en riker, högfärdig man
sa tack och adjö och försvann.

4. Nu står jag vid städet sliten och grå
och hammaren bultar och hjärtat också,
men aldrig den flickan kommer igen,
hon är hos sin nyvunne vän.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Hej hoppfadderiddlade raddlade rej.
Nej, aldrig den flickan kommer igen
men låten den trallar jag än:

5. Tra daj da di da da….

Lyrics: Verse 1, Traditional
Verses 2-5, Anders Nyberg, Eva Nyberg - Fast

© Peace of Music Publishing 1981

The words of “Smedsvisan”, from verse 2 and onwards, were written by me and my sister Eva in 1978, but most people believe they are a lot older than that. The song has become a staple in the Swedish choir repertoire and in most cases the lyrics are presented as “traditional”, so our attempt to write a pastiche in line with the old traditional first verse, was successful beyond our imagination...

The melody was brought to the attention of a bigger audience by pianist/composer Jan Johansson. We heard it in Stockholm’s Concert hall on November 9, 1978 in a concert commemorating Johansson’s untimely death 10 years earlier. Fjedur sang invited by Arne Domnérus Orchestra and the concert was our debut on the stages of Stockholm and became a catapult for our future work.

After doing some research I realised there was only one verse to the song, but a verse that definitely begged for more, so Eva and I wrote the rest. Being a bit shy of our contribution we however downplayed our role in it at its introduction in Skinnskatteberg’s Choir Festival the following year and off it went as “traditional”. Tjoo!
