Erie Canal

I've got a mule her name is Sal
Fifteen miles on the Erie-Canal!
She's a good ol' worker and a good ol' pal
Fifteen miles on the Erie-Canal!
We've hauled some barges in our day
Filled with lumber, coal, and hay
And we know every inch of the way
From Albany to Buffalo.

Low bridge, everybody down!
Low bridge, 'cause we're coming to a town.
And you'll always know your neighbor,
you'll always know your pal
If you ever navigated on the Erie Canal.

We better get along on our way ol' gal.
Fifteen miles on the Erie Canal! '
Cause you bet your life I'd never part with Sal
Fifteen miles on the Erie-Canal!
Get up there mule, here comes a lock
We'll make Rome 'bout six o'clock
One more trip and back we'll go
Right back home to Buffalo.

Low bridge, everybody down
Low bridge, we're coming to a town
You'll always know your neighbor
And you'll always know your pal
If you ever navigated on the Erie Canal.

Lyrics and Music: Trad. USA

Arrangement: Anders Nyberg

A wonderful song by the mule drivers of the Erie Canal. According to Carl Carmer "riders of the slow canal boats got many a bruised head from failing to heed the warning cry of the 'hoggie' or mule-driver."

When you come to the part "Low bridge!" you can illustrate the passage under the bridge by letting the choir duck from left to right as the "boat" passes. Maybe somebody fails to heed the call...

A song that definitely will be a hit, if not on your head, so in your concert-program.
